ATLANTA — Georgia’s 2019 abortion law that restricts the procedure once a doctor can detect fetal cardiac activity will be back in effect during the legal process, the state Supreme Court ordered on Wednesday.
Attorneys representing Gov. Brian Kemp had asked the Georgia Supreme Court to reverse a Superior Court ruling released last week that blocked enforcement of the state’s anti-abortion law, which bars the procedure typically around six weeks into a pregnancy and before many know they are pregnant.

Many young people in South Korea have chosen not to marry or have children, citing a change of views toward a marriage and family life and uncertainty of their future. The country’s census shows the population shrank for the first time last year. Other advanced countries have similar trends, but South Korea’s demographic crisis is much worse. Some experts say a declining population could cause a massive strain on the country’s economy, the world’s 10th largest, because of a labor shortage and a greater welfare spending on older people. President Yoon Suk Yeol has recently instructed officials to work out more scientific, effective steps to raise the fertility rate to address these challenges.

Medical examiners have released the names of the four people who died in a small plane crash Friday northeast of Seattle. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner said Wednesday that the victims included three men from Washington state: 33-year-old Nathan Precup of Seattle; 49-year-old Nate Lachendro, of Gig Harbor, and 52-year-old Scott Brenneman of Roy. The medical examiner’s office also said 67-year-old David Newton of Wichita, Kansas, died in the crash. All died of blunt-force injuries, according to the medical examiner’s office. Raisbeck Engineering of Seattle said previously that two were “highly experienced” test pilots, one was a flight-test director and one an instrumentation engineer.

Russian rockets have rained down on a small town in eastern Ukraine for the second time in a week, killing a newborn boy and destroying the municipal hospital. A doctor was critically injured in the overnight attack Wednesday. Six days ago, according to the mayor, 11 people died when a Russian rocket hit an apartment building. Kyrilo, the baby boy killed in the latest rocket attack, was born two days ago. He and his mother were supposed to be discharged Wednesday. Russia has targeted hospitals repeatedly since the war began Feb. 24, including a deadly airstrike in March on a maternity ward in the city of Mariupol that killed a woman and her unborn child.

Reformist opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim is close to becoming Malaysia’s new prime minister after a political party agreed to support a unity government following inconclusive elections. Any agreement must be approved by Malaysia’s king. Last Saturday’s election deadlock led to a hung parliament that renewed a leadership crisis in Malaysia, which has had three prime ministers since 2018. Anwar’s multiethnic alliance has 82 parliamentary seats, short of the 112 needed for a majority. Former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s Malay-centric bloc won 73 seats. The United Malays National Organization said it will now support a unity government that is not led by Muhyiddin. If all 30 lawmakers from UMNO’s alliance support Anwar, he will secure a majority to form a government.
The head of Brazil’s electoral authority has rejected the request from President Jair Bolsonaro and his party to annul ballots cast on most electronic voting machines, which would have overturned the Oct. 30 election. He also established a fine of 23 million reais ($4.3 million) for bad faith litigation. De Moraes had issued a prior ruling that conditioned analysis of the request on the presentation of an amended report to include results from the first electoral round on Oct. 2, in which Bolsonaro’s won more seats in both congressional houses than any other, and he established a 24-hour deadline. Earlier Wednesday, Costa and de Bessa said there would be no amended report.
Democrat Mary Peltola wins reelection to U.S. House in Alaska’s at-large Congressional District.
Alaska U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola has been elected to a full term in the House. The win comes months after the Democrat won a special election to the seat following the death of longtime Republican Rep. Don Young in March. Peltola defeated Republicans Sarah Palin and Nick Begich and Libertarian Chris Bye in the Nov. 8 election to win the full two-year term. Peltola, who is Yup’ik, with her win in the August special election became the first Alaska Native to serve in Congress and first woman to hold Alaska’s only House seat. Results of the ranked vote Nov. 8 election were announced Wednesday.
Alaska Republican U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski has won reelection, defeating a fellow Republican who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Murkowski beat Kelly Tshibaka in the Nov. 8 ranked choice election. The race also included Democrat Pat Chesbro and Republican Buzz Kelley, who suspended his campaign after the primary and endorsed Tshibaka. Murkowski was the only Senate Republican who voted to convict Trump at his impeachment trial last year who was on the ballot this year. Trump was not convicted. But her vote was a sore point raised by Trump, who had vowed to campaign against her. Murkowski paid little attention to Trump during a campaign in which she emphasized a willingness to work across party lines and focused on her record and seniority.
