Have we gotten to a point in this country where we are now okay with hurting human beings in the name of politics? It seems that this is so given the recent news that State Governors found it alright to bus human beings under false pretenses to other parts of the county where the opposite party is in power without notification as to allow those receiving these people time to set up places for them to stay, eat and get the basics one needs to live.
I understand that many of you will immediately dispute this and even stop reading this with the intent to write it off as false or to defend your political beliefs, but it is my hope that your sense of humanity will take over your thoughts as this action regardless of the intent was just wrong. Misleading or using humans for political gain is never acceptable.
This last week we all watched and heard, and many made jokes about the ” human trafficking of migrants” for political positioning or to make a point to those on the opposite side of the spectrum politically.
While some conservatives applaud the move, immigrant rights groups and the mayors of the regions recieiving those migrants say that placing people on buses and sending them to other states is a political stunt that exploits and misleads migrants. And organizations that work with migrants say they’re feeling the strain.
For those who may have missed it, we had at least two incidents where people who came to the United States for a better life, were made promises that they were being moved to another town and would have living and working accommodations in these towns. Yet the truth is that these folks were simply sent to places where nobody was even aware they were coming and were then dropped off on a street corner with no food, a place to stay etc. Many of these dropped off were children.
Tell me, what kind of person to say nothing of a Governor would do something like this regardless of why they are here and how they got here? They are still human beings! This latest episode was done by two Governors who belong to a party that claims to represent the Christian faith with its claims against women’s right to choose etc. I ask those who perpetrated this shipment of people what would Christ have done. We all know that he would have fed them, and tried to help them!
It’s bad enough that our political world has become so manipulated by both sides, both parties, that we can’t get anything done for the betterment of our country, constantly seeing good ideas from one another being completely derailed by the opposing party for no other reason than the fact that it was thought of and created by the opposite party.
There is no doubt that we have an immigration issue in this country but we must never forget that all of us came from somewhere, less the American Indians, and we all need to remember that our differences are what made this country great. Unfortunately rather than fixing our problems with a bipartisan discussion we now have taken to using immigrants/human beings as pawns.
Immigration reform requires frankness, compassion, broad public buy-in, clarity, incentives to follow the law, and a willingness to make hard political choices. None of this has taken place in at least the last two administrations in Washington. No one has the guts to solve the problem; politicians see only the risks.
As an election approaches maybe it’s time for the people, the voters to stand up and get rid of all these professional politicians and replace them with term-limited candidates who understand that our constitution is by the people, for the people. Nowhere does it determine which people are privileged and which are not. We all are human beings even if we came from migrant beginnings. No wonder we now live in a country where we can’t allow our kids to go out and play without being watched, even in their own front yards. No wonder we have hate killings almost every day and our kids are no longer safe in schools. Somehow, some way, we need to find a way to get back to the days of caring about each other as human beings first, regardless of our color or place of origin.
It has to start in our hearts and with those we elected to represent us, not their own political futures!
